What to Expect With Immediate Dentures

An immediate denture is made before your teeth are extracted and placed the same day they are removed, so you leave with teeth in place. Because your gums will shrink as they heal, expect several adjustments and a reline in the months that follow — this is a normal, planned part of the process, not a problem.

How immediate dentures are made

Records, impressions and measurements are taken while your natural teeth are still present. The denture is fabricated in advance so it is ready on the day of extraction. After your dentist or oral surgeon removes the teeth, the immediate denture is placed right away.

Because the denture is made to fit your mouth as it is before extractions, the fit on day one is an estimate of how the healed gums will look. We cannot preview the final result with a full try-in the way we can with conventional dentures, and we explain that clearly before you commit.

The healing phase and why relines are expected

Gums and bone remodel quickly after extractions — most of the change happens in the first few months. As the tissue shrinks, the denture that fit on day one gradually loosens. This is expected, and it is why an immediate denture is really a two-stage treatment: the immediate denture first, then a reline (or a definitive new denture) once tissues stabilise.

Plan on follow-up adjustments for sore spots and a reline within the first year for most patients. We schedule these so the denture stays comfortable and functional throughout healing.

The first 24 hours

You will be asked to keep the denture in place for the first day to help control swelling and protect the surgical sites. Follow your surgical provider’s instructions exactly for diet, pain management and when to return. Do not remove the denture yourself before the first follow-up unless you are told to.

Who immediate dentures suit best

They are a good option when you do not want to be without teeth during healing — for work, social reasons or simply confidence. The trade-off is the extra adjustments and the eventual reline or replacement. We lay out both the benefits and the follow-up commitment at your consultation so there are no surprises.

Common Patient Questions

Will the immediate denture fit well right away?

It is made to fit your mouth as it is before extractions, so early fit is an estimate. As healing changes the shape of your gums, adjustments and relines restore the fit. This is a normal, expected part of immediate denture treatment.

Who performs the tooth extractions?

Extractions are performed by a dentist or oral surgeon. Nova designs and provides the denture and coordinates timing with your surgical provider as part of collaborative care.

How long until I need a reline or new denture?

Healing is most active in the first months. Many patients need a reline within the first year, and some choose a definitive new denture once tissues stabilize. Timing varies by person.
