A custom night guard is a precisely fitted appliance worn during sleep that creates a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth, absorbing the forces of grinding and clenching (bruxism). It protects natural teeth and dental work from wear and damage, and is far more effective than one-size store-bought guards.

Signs you may be grinding at night

Many grinders are unaware of it until a partner mentions it or symptoms appear. Common signs include waking with jaw tiredness or soreness, morning headaches, tooth sensitivity, and visible wear, chipping or flattening of the teeth.

Grinding can also damage crowns, veneers and other dental work over time. If any of these sound familiar, an assessment is worthwhile before the damage accumulates.

Why a custom guard beats a store-bought one

A custom guard is made from precise impressions of your teeth, so it fits securely, stays in place and distributes forces evenly across the arch. Boil-and-bite guards are bulkier, fit loosely, and can even aggravate the jaw by positioning the bite poorly.

Custom materials are also more durable, lasting years for lighter grinders, and the guard can be designed for your specific grinding pattern rather than a generic shape.

What a guard can and cannot do

A night guard protects your teeth from the effects of grinding, but it usually does not stop the habit itself. If stress, sleep issues or jaw-joint problems are involved, we may suggest seeing the appropriate provider alongside wearing the guard.

Guards wear over time and eventually need replacement. Bring yours to your checkups so we can assess the wear — a heavily worn guard is a sign it is doing its job, and that it may be time for a new one.

Common Patient Questions

How is a custom guard different from a store-bought one?

A custom guard is made from impressions of your teeth, so it fits precisely, stays in place and distributes forces evenly. Boil-and-bite guards are bulkier, fit loosely and wear out quickly.

Will a night guard stop me from grinding?

A guard protects your teeth from the effects of grinding but usually does not stop the habit itself. If stress, sleep issues or jaw-joint problems are involved, we may suggest seeing the appropriate provider.

How long does a night guard last?

It depends on how heavily you grind — anywhere from a year or two for heavy grinders to several years for lighter wear. We check it at your regular visits.
